As a poker player, January is always one of my favorite months. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and to look ahead. And with that in mind, here are some events and promotions on the horizon and a recap of some successes as well.

TALKING STICK RESORT: On Nov. 22, 109 couples entered the second annual Jack-N-Jill Championship, which has a unique structure. The women competed against each other for 30 minutes and then the men took their turn at the tables for the next half-hour. After rotating like this for several hours, the field was whittled to the final 10 couples and all of them were in the money. Rather than play any further, each couple took $817 in a 10-way chop.

The winning couples were: Clyde and Carol Gierut, Mark and Bernice Whisenand, Dennis and Jeanne Haser, Earl and Jeanell Hernandez, Ervin and Julianne Bierbaum, plus Lois Corona, Andrew Provencio, Bryan Kelley, Joel Perlman, Angela Allison and their partners.

Talking Stick has large-scale events most weekends to complement its regular daily tournaments. Events this month include the Tournament Staycation Weekend (Jan. 2-4). This features three tournaments (Jan. 2, $200; Jan. 3, $300; Jan. 4, $300) and each event players start with 13K chips. If you enter all three days of the of the Staycation, you’ll receive two free nights at the resort. To sign up for a three-day package, call (480) 850-7734. You can also sign up for individual days at the poker cage.

Also, don’t forget the End of the Month event on Jan. 31 ($195), which gets you 6K chips.

HON-DAH CASINO RESORT: Congratulations to Tom Schafer, Hon-Dah’s newest Tournament of Champions winner.

FORT MCDOWELL CASINO: This poker room has a full slate of 15 weekly tournaments and you can win $300 for Aces Cracked.

CLIFF CASTLE CASINO: Club 52 Poker Room features daily tournaments, Aces Cracked, high hands and splash pots.

BUCKY’S CASINO: There are plenty of tournaments and action at Bucky’s Poker Room. And don’t forget Ladies Night and the fine splash pots promotion. Call the room for more details.

TWIN ARROWS RESORT: Look for morning and evening splash pots and Aces and Faces Cracked. The poker room also adds money for its Thursday and Saturday tournaments. There’s nothing quite like an overlay in tournament poker.
