In the last issue of Ante Up, I mentioned something was brewing at Mystique Greyhound Park and Casino. Here are the specifics: As most locals know, Field of Dreams was filmed in Dubuque County. This movie site has been preserved over the years, but has recently changed hands and the ownership now belongs to Go the Distance LLC.
Development of this site into a baseball mega-complex is in the works and to get this going there is a softball game featuring several well-known MLB players on Sept. 14. While this is subject to change, here’s the list: Reggie Jackson, Pete Rose, Jim Rice, Johnny Bench, Wade Boggs, Frank Thomas, Jim Palmer, Rod Carew, Bruce Sutter, Carlton Fisk, Ozzie Smith and Dwight Gooden.
Once the softball game ends, five of the players will head to Mystique for a no-limit hold’em tournament called Team of Dreams. There will be one baseball great at each table and if they get knocked out, the player knocking out the legend will get the shirt (autographed) off his back. What a keepsake for baseball fans. See the ad on Page 40 in our August issue for details.
You must act quickly, however, as the seating is limited to 50 players. The buy-in is $1,100 and first place will win more than $20K to go along with the great memories and maybe a signed jersey. Nine places will share in the prize money.
GRAND FALLS: The Mid-States Poker Tour visits Grand Falls Casino Resort in Larchwood, near Sioux Falls, S.D., on Aug 8-18. There will be a $100K guarantee for this event. The buy-in for the main event is $1,110 and there are satellites running if you want to get in cheaply.
HORSESHOE: The Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs will hold its Horseshoe Poker Classic on Aug. 20-26, and I will be in attendance for some of these great events. The buy-in runs from $150 for the lesser events to $1K for the main event and there are cheaper satellites as well. (See ad on Page 4 of our August issue.)
While most of the events are NLHE, as you would expect, there is a $200 Omaha/8 tournament Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. In addition to these great tournaments, there’s always great cash-game action around the Horseshoe events so come join me at this great location and share in the excitement.
RIVERSIDE: I recently stopped at Riverside Resort and Casino (south of Iowa City) to play some poker. This is a nice room with bigger tournaments. It has good draw from Iowa City and Cedar Rapids as well as smaller surrounding communities. If you haven’t been by this poker room in a while, I would recommend a visit. See the ad in our August issue for the Fallout Championship.
