You may not be familiar with Larry Ormson, but don’t be surprised if you see him take down a major tournament sometime soon. The 58-year-old from Elroy, Wis., started playing poker in 2010, but is mixing it up in bigger buy-in events because, as he states, they offer “more excitement, better players and bigger bluffs.”
“I am playing over 50 events this summer,” Ormson said of his upcoming schedule. “The WSOP main event, $5K, some $1,500 events, and the World Poker Tour championship in May.”
The 15th of 17 siblings, Ormson has been in the plastics business since 1982 when his company started making Trivial Pursuit games. Now he enjoys spending time with his wife of 20 years, Linda, and their four children (Heather, Jake, Hayley and Zach) while supplementing his income through poker.
“I won $122,000 in cash games in the fall of 2010 between Bellagio and Aria in a weekend,” Ormson said when asked about his greatest poker accomplishment. “I won a Deep Stack at Venetian and took 78th out of 3,700 players in the over-50 event last year. But I think the best accomplishment is I became good friends with Tom Marchese, William Reynolds, Chance Kornuth, Dave Orvis, Keith Ferrera and David Bednar. That is the best.”
