The inaugural PokerStars Festival debuted in Atlantic City at the Resorts Casino Hotel on Oct. 29-Nov. 6 and Jason Acosta won the $1,100 main event, topping a field of nearly 210 players. He defeated Mike Gagliano heads-up for $38,220. The 30-year-old recreational player from Little Ferry, N.J., qualified for the event on PokerStars, parlaying 500 StarsCoins into the largest payday of his tournament career.

“I thought the event was run really well,” he said. “The floor people were good, the dealers were good and the set-up is great. I’ve won tournaments online before, but nothing for this amount of money. It was a really tough field. There were a lot of solid players. This the top for me.”

The schedule also featured the third annual Chad Brown Memorial charity event with a large group of PokerStars pros attending, including Daniel Negreanu, Chris Moneymaker, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst and Barry Greenstein. The $200 event with unlimited $100 rebuys raised $20K for the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS research.

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Somerville took the top spot, earning $4,290 and a $5K PokerStars Championship Main Event seat. Somerville beat Jen Shahade, who picked up $3,225 along with a PPC main-event seat. Rounding out the top three was former TV reality show Survivor star “Boston” Rob Mariano, who took home $2,425.

A lack of advertising and publicity meant low turnout. The $340 PokerStars Cup event opener got 107 entrants for a prize pool of $31,137. Je Wook “Mikey” Oh won the event and $6,520.

“Honestly, I came on Sunday to play the $2,200 six-max,” he said. “But I only saw five registrants, so I jumped in the $340. … I’m so glad to win this event despite the small turnout. A win is a win.”

Meet Jason Trzebny

Jason Trzebny is adeaf poker player from Washington. He plays regularly throughout the area, but his main expertise is tactile and close-vision interpreting for deaf-blind consumers, emergency legal-police interpreting and some conference interpreting. He has been interpreting professionally since 2001.

How long have you been involved with poker? I actually didn’t learn poker until college. It was a great addition to my college experience; I would be going to house games and hosting a lot. It was also when I was introduced to online poker. There used to be regular deaf members-only tournaments (online). Playing online poker taught me a lot about how to play and removed communication barriers.

Where do you usually play? Locally, there aren’t a lot of home games lately, but when I can, I go to charity tournaments in the D.C. area (allinenterprises.org). I haven’t won one of those charity tournaments yet. As for casinos, I go to Maryland Live and the Horseshoe in Baltimore. I’m looking forward to going to the new MGM National Harbor. The last time I won a tournament, it was a few years ago for almost $5K at the Showboat in Atlantic City.

What is your involvement in the deaf poker community? Poker is active in the deaf community. There are regional and national tournaments in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. All kinds of tournaments: women only, deaf-hard-of-hearing and tournaments open for anyone as long as they know sign language. Info can be found at deafpokerworld.com.
