Mystique Casino in Dubuque held its $220 buy-in no-limit hold’em on July 9. The event, which attracted nearly 40 players, is held every six weeks and is well-run.

At the end of the day I was able to luck-box my way into the top spot, taking home a little more than $3,000. This tournament will run again Oct. 1. I most likely will be found at the table trying to prove it wasn’t just dumb luck. So join me and tell me how Ante Up is doing. Weekly satellites run every Tuesday at 6 p.m.

• During a visit to Waterloo I dropped by the Isle of Capri and found it had just opened a new poker room upstairs. They recently held the grand opening and it went well.

This is a smaller room with four tables, but the staff was friendly and I was treated well. They said there’s a strong game on Tuesday nights, a $5-$10 pot-limit mixed game that rotates hold’em, Omaha and Omaha/8.

Normally, this gets going about 3 p.m. and runs well after midnight. If you’d like to know more about this game or the other action at Waterloo, call 800-843-4753. There’s a great waterpark called Lost Island across the street where you can drop off the family.

• Coming up at Meskwaki Casino in October will be the Heartland Poker Tour. This will run Oct. 30-Nov. 6. There are plenty of satellites if you want to get in “on the cheap.”

Watch for the October issue of Ante Up for a more detailed schedule. One thing worth mentioning about Meskwaki is it allows 18-year-olds to play. Meskwaki has one of the larger poker rooms in Iowa and has good action, which greatly increases during these bigger events.
